Alexander “Alex” Clyde, an admired and conscientious snooker journalist who worked for the London Evening Standard, has died at the age of 81.

Alex started covering snooker in 1978 and was a knowledgeable figure as he reported at all the top events for more than 20 years. He was always popular with players and press room colleagues alike.

Alex delighted in retelling the story of his first meeting with twice world champion Alex Higgins when the Hurricane jokingly said to Alex: “There’s only room for one Alex in snooker.”

Matchroom President Barry Hearn said: “Alex Clyde was one of snooker’s most respected journalists and was a familiar face at all the major tournaments.

“Steve Davis, the other Matchroom players and I were always delighted to be interviewed by Alex and he joined us on some of our overseas trips that helped spread snooker around the world.

“He will be sorely missed and our sympathies go to his wife, Linda, and their families.”

Alex’s funeral is on Friday, March 21 (2 pm) at Southend Crematorium (West Chapel), Sutton Road, SS2 5PX.
