This was a showdown between two giants of the sport, who were contesting a world final against each other for the first time. It was 15 years since Williams had conquered the Crucible, his three children hadn't even been born when he defeated Ken Doherty in the 2003 world final. The Welsh Potting Machine knew victory against Higgins would give him a coveted third world title in 2018.
Higgins was in the middle of a string of three consecutive trips to snooker's biggest match, between 2017 and 2019. He had surrendered a significant lead to lose the 2017 title match against Mark Selby and was blown away by Judd Trump in 2019. The Wizard of Wishaw would have to overcome one of his great rivals to win a fifth World Championship in 2018.
Williams, who said he would conduct the post match press conference naked if he were to win the title, earned his place in the final with a fiercely contested 17-15 win over Barry Hawkins. There were suggestions the Welshman could be jaded heading into the final, he finished his press duties in the early hours and celebrated victory with a post-match kebab.
By stark contrast, Higgins came into the title match fresh, having completed a 17-13 win over Kyren Wilson in the afternoon session.
