Recalling his Crucible triumph in 1997, Doherty said: "I'd had a terrible season. In the Masters I lost 6-1 to Steve Davis, then he beat me 6-1 again in the Irish Masters. The last tournament before Sheffield was the British Open and I lost in the first round to Michael Judge. I had to win my first match at the Crucible just to stay in the top 16. I think the bookies had me about 33-1 or 40-1. My first match was against Mark Davis and I won 10-8 which was such a big relief.
"Going into the final, I was petrified. Playing Stephen (Hendry) was like an away match because he was so used to it and so dominant, he was going for six titles in a row. In one of the early frames I broke off, Stephen knocked a long red in and made a century, it was like he was playing on his own table. But after that for some reason I felt relaxed and he didn't play his best game."
Doherty and Hendry also name their most under-rated players of all time.
